What is a Substance Abuse Evaluation?

A substance abuse evaluation is a comprehensive assessment process that typically involves an in-depth interview between an individual and an addictions counselor. The purpose of this assessment is to gather direct evidence supporting either the presence or absence of a diagnosable condition. This evaluation can take anywhere from 90 minutes to several hours and requires specialized skills. It involves a series of questions aimed at assessing the probability of a substance use disorder. The evaluation may also include the use of standardized screening tools like the Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS) tool or the Drug Abuse Screen Test (DAST-10).

When Are Substance Abuse Evaluations Required?

Substance abuse evaluations are often required in situations where individuals find themselves in legal trouble due to alcohol or illegal drug-related issues. In such cases, the court may order a substance abuse evaluation.
